You Can Actually Make a Difference to the Environment – it’s easier than you realize.

Feel empowered by these many ways you can reduce climate change. Even small switches, so small, you don’t even notice them, can make a difference to the environment. We’re learning how one person staying at home during a pandemic can prevent thousands from getting a virus. Similarly, one person making an environmentally kind choice, can positively impact the choices of hundreds of others. Better yet, working collectively, the impact we have is dramatic. The struggle our planet faces can seem daunting – but, there is hope! We’ve faced challenges before and made change to save the planet. We can do it again. You have the power to make a difference. Here’s 10 ways that will empower you how big of a difference you can make on the environment.

“The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” – Ernest Hemingway

The changing climate effects our health from our ability to grow food, to the emersion of new viruses.

What is climate change?

Across the globe, people are fighting for the planet. Global warming has caused more intense heat waves, floods in many communities in Canada, fires in California, and drought in Australia. Even close to home you’ve been impacted by global warming. Extreme weather puts a strain on food crops, increasing the cost of food. Water temperatures in the Great Lakes have warmed, altering species migration, and reduced ice cover impacting winter tourism. A warmer climate means fewer cold days in the winter; a natural control for certain pests and diseases (Lyme disease, West Nile virus).

Can We Stop Climate Change?

Yes, we can stop climate change – we’ve done it before! Working together in 1987, when the hole in the Ozone Layer was growing, the Montreal Protocol propelled us to make changes in the products we used. The ozone layer has started to recover. Changes to how we use harmful chemicals has helped populations of Bald Eagles to rebound – they have returned to many regions in North America. Switching to green energy, supports the installation of wind turbines and solar panels. Even simple switches, such as how we changed refrigerators, are examples of things you can do today to help reduce climate change. Even just one person can make a significant impact on the climate crisis.

You can help the environment, one small choice at a time.

How Can I Help The Planet?

You can make a difference to the environment. Simple choices can lower how much carbon dioxide your lifestyle contributes to the planet: eat local food, switch your energy provider, and recycling.

What Can I Do About Climate Change?

If we can even just hold our current levels of carbon dioxide emissions, the planet will warm by 6 degrees, says NASA scientists. This would certainly alter our fashion choices, and drastically alter our ability to find fresh water and food. It’s time to make an impact. Be a #changemaker – be a part of the climate crisis solution.

10 Ways You Can Reduce Climate Change

  1. Plant Something
  2. Shop Mindfully
  3. Give Sustainably
  4. Talk Up the Earth
  5. Eat Sustainably
  6. Donate to the Planet
  7. Hitch a Fuel-Efficient Ride
  8. Waste Not
  9. Vote for the Earth
  10. Skip Single Use Plastics

What may seem like small actions to you, when done collectively by thousands, can have a significant impact on the planet. Remember that persistence is key to reducing climate change. Keep with it! You CAN make a difference for the planet. Here are 10 ways you can reduce climate change:

1. Plant Something

Plants naturally consume carbon dioxide. Plant trees on your property. Grow flowers. Avoid palm oil-containing products whose production is promoting deforestation.

2. Shop Mindfully

Buying less saves you money and reduces waste. Support eco-friendly brands, such as B-Corp companies, and use your purchasing power to promote sustainability. Some companies, such as Vitarock, pre-screen every brand and product they carry to ensure it’s eco-friendly and sociably responsible.

3. Give Sustainably

Buy vintage. Give a plant. Bake something. Give an experience. Avoid plastic-based toys, or inexpensive gifts that end up in the landfill.

4. Talk Up the Earth

Share ideas with friends of ways to help stop climate change. Talk to your local member of government to encourage change. Tell the brands you love to make more sustainable products.

5. Eat Sustainably

Food production contributes about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, and is responsible for 60% of global biodiversity loss. Buy local food. Eat more plant-based meals. Better yet, grow your own fruits and vegetables.

6. Donate to the Planet

Non-profit organizations educate consumers and governments to help change human behaviour to improve the health of the planet and stop climate change. Donations help them do more.

7. Hitch a Fuel-Efficient Ride

Transportation is one of the most polluting sectors. Choose smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, or hybrid-electric cars. You can also walk, cycle, or carpool when possible.

8. Waste Not

Compost any food you can’t eat. Turn left overs into culinary delights (sort of like in the television show Chopped). Repair items you can. Buy less. Avoid over packaged products. Learn what you can recycle. Garbage in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas.

9. Vote for the Earth

In elections, let representatives know you want stopping climate change as a top issue. Vote for politicians who are going to make changes to better the planet.

10. Skip Single Use Plastics

When ordering a drink, ask for no straw. Take a water bottle, reusable coffee cup and reusable shopping bags when you leave the house. Use beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap.

Yes, you can have an impact on the environment. It may seem small, to reuse a single plastic bag, or recycle a can …but when we work together, these small things have a massive impact.
